GETTING STARTED

WHAT TO READ

Welcome, welcome! Joining a roleplay server can be an intimidating prospect, even for those who have some RP experience under their belts. This guide will help you begin your roleplay journey with confidence!

To start with, there are some very important pages and documents that you should peruse. Let's list them with links and explain why they are important.

Server Info

This page holds the important basics of the server: the map, the rates, and IP, and important links. A quick glance can tell you what to expect as the foundation of your time here.

Rules

All core rules and guidelines you'll need to know are found within this page. It's a lot of information, so pace yourself. It's been broken into sections to make it easier to digest, but make sure you take time to carefully and thoroughly read everything before you move on.

Lore

Every roleplay server has some story behind the world it takes place in. This story is referred to as 'lore.' The lore of a server defines the in-game world that your character will inhabit, where they came from and where they're going. Generally speaking, most roleplay servers only has base lore, but Lithium & Chill takes lore one step further by including on-going lore as part of its history. Which means that when events happen in-game that help shape the world, it will be added to this page!

Races

Some servers only allow characters to be human. Some, like us, allow a range of races with unique traits and buffs. You will find all information you will need about each and every race on this page.

Professions

Again, some servers allow all engrams/items to be crafted and used freely for the utmost freedom. Some, like us, restrict engrams, items, and certain permissions, to specific jobs, or professions. This prevents a single character to be entirely self-sufficient, meaning that everyone has to rely on everyone for what they need to succeed. The point of roleplay is to interact, of course!

Afflictions

This page is optional reading. A few servers, like Lithium, allow afflictions for characters. Such as Vampirism and Lycanthropy. It can be handy to know what you might be up against should your character come across an afflicted, of course, but it's up to you whether you want to do a deep-dive.

Economy

This section consists of three different pages, all grouped under the same category. These pages are a veritable wealth of information about... well, wealth.

The Market page describes various ways to make money in-game and on the Discord (a {potentially} Lithium & Chill exclusive option!), and useful ways to spend your in-game coin. If you ever find yourself with coin burning a hole in your pocket, we've got a way you can benefit yourself by using it!

Patreon describes what donations to support the server can see you rewarded with. Don't worry, we are not pay-to-win. Every donation goes to directly support the server, and all rewards are things that can be achieved through normal gameplay. We only use these rewards as thanks for your support!

Referral System explains the benefits for you and your friends for referring people to the server. The more the merrier (and wealthier)!

The whitelist application will ask you some test questions to check your knowledge of this information, so make sure you feel very comfortable in your reading before moving on.

HOW TO MAKE A CHARACTER

As you were reading through those pages, you very likely had an idea of a character forming in the back of your mind. Now, it's time to bring them to life! Let's go through some common things you'll need to flesh out your character.

Name

What do you want character to be called? Full name? First name? Nickname?

Age

     How old are they?

Gender

Male or female? While things such as intersex may exist, we work in binaries to keep things simple!

Race

     Which race are they?

Profession

What job best fits their knowledge and desires?

Appearance

What do they look like? What's their eye color? Hair color? How tall are they? Are they portly or slender? Do they have any notable features like scars? Many roleplayers use art (pictures, drawings, etc.) to depict their character. Others use written description. Jot down in any fashion how you want your character to look!

Personality

What are some strengths? Weaknesses? Fears? Hopes? Dreams? Whether you list traits in bullet points or write descriptions in paragraphs, this is where you express what makes your character tick; How and why they interact with the world.

History

Where did you character come from? How did they get to where they are now? Was there a defining moment that shaped them in life? This is the genesis story of your character.

Not all of this information will be used in the whitelist application, but having it for reference as you play your character is the mark of a good roleplayer; Stay true to who your character is!

HOW TO APPLY

Applying your character for whitelist is a rather simple affair. In truth, it is mostly self-explanatory, but there may be a few people who would appreciate a bit more guidance. So here we go!

Join the Discord

If you haven't already, you are going to need to join the Discord in order to apply. You'll need to also remain a part of it as long as you are playing on the server; Wouldn't want to miss out on giveaway announcements would you?

Find the #support channel

Under the category labeled "Community Engagement," you will find the #support channel first in the list. This channel is where you can open tickets of varying types to suit your varying needs.

Open a Whitelist Ticket

There are several different ticket types. The one you are looking for is at the top, labeled "Whitelist." Go ahead and click the emoji with the same label to pop open a ticket. When the ticket has been opened, the bot will tag you in the new channel to direct you to it.

Fill out and submit your application

In the ticket channel, a link to the Google Form that is the character application will be given to you. Go ahead and click it. Once the page opens, fill out each field with the requisite information. If you've followed the above part of the guide, you should have no trouble doing so!

Alert staff

Back in your ticket channel, go ahead and let staff know that you've submitted your application. You can do this by simply posting something to the effect of "I've submitted my app!" Then all that's left is to wait. However, if you hear nothing in your ticket within 24 hours, please post again to garner staff attention.

Be accepted

Once your application has been approved, staff will post in your ticket channel letting you know. They'll assign the appropriate Discord roles to you, and whitelist your Steam64 ID on the game server. If it hasn't been approved, don't panic! Staff will guide you through how to fix it. When everything is settled, your ticket will be closed.

Be free!

Once your ticket is closed... you are free to join the server and roleplay!

It's here! Time to load in to the server for the first time! Let's get you ready to begin writing your story through roleplay!

Survivor Screen

When you first join the server, you'll get the base game character creation screen. All you need to do is type in your character's name and choose male or female. The true creation will take place after you spawn in and use the Cosplay Evolved mirror.

Spawn Location

The default spawn locations have been disabled on the server. This leaves you with the choice to spawn at the starter town. Don't worry, you will be safe inside the starter town! It may take a moment to load all the structures, though, so be patient.

Race and Profession

When you spawn, you will be greeted by two different prompts. One is to choose your race, one is to choose your profession. Simply click the ones you chose for your character, then accept, and you're good. If you make a mistake, don't panic. Just alert staff and they'll help you out!

Character Creation

Now is the time to mold your Beach Bob/Bobette into the character you envisioned! Since all spawn locations are within a Trade Center, all you need to do is pan your camera left or right to find a Cosplay Evolved mirror on a wall nearby. Approach the mirror, hit E to interact with it, and a menu will fill your screen. Adjust your appearance, add parts, and so on, until you are satisfied. Then, make sure you save a template, and you're good to go!

If you aren't familiar with the Cosplay Evolved mod and need some more help, see our Cosplay Evolved guide.

Gear Up

The starter town has a few important items that each character can grab before they set out. These items are typically a basic set of tools, a set of cloth armor, a waterskin, and a sleeping bag. These can be found in the wall vaults in the spawn building.

Dress Up

Next to the mirrors will be wardrobes and storage boxes with various dyes. This is where you will browse the many clothing options, color them, and apply them to your starter armor to build your outfit. Some roleplayers make several outfits right at the start so they don't have to come back later, but this area will always be available, so don't feel like you have to!

Mount Up

Starter mounts are available to help you more easily traverse the lands until you are able to tame or breed your own creatures. These mounts are typically something rather weak in combat, but can carry a decent amount or move relatively quickly. Certainly not something that is worth keeping once you have any kind of replacement, but enough to get you started. They should be within your starter kit from the vault!

Mental Map

Take a moment to look around the starter town so that you know where the various areas are. It will be immensely helpful in the future when you're looking to sell your wares!

Venture Out

What you do once you step outside the safety of the starter town is entirely up to you. It is highly recommended you think about basic survival--shelter, water, food--and make a plan to take care of those as soon as possible. However, if you were to find others to join, you could solve all three of those in one fell swoop!

FIRST DAY IN GAME

SURVIVAL

If you've ever watched any survival shows on television, you'll have an idea of the three most important things when it comes to survival; shelter, water, and food. In that order. The general rule of thumb is that you will last 3 hours without appropriate shelter in harsh conditions, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. This is an extremely rough guide to follow, as the number of variables that change these timelines is vast, but it does put into perspective what is important and motivates you to work quickly to keep these basic needs met.

Here on Lithium, we use a collection of mods known as Kanga. This collections adds several survival mechanics, buffs, and debuffs, that alter things such as hunger, sickness, and death. Not all of these status effects are obvious nor have intuitive solutions, so we've created a list of here to make it easier to know how to identify and treat an altered status. You can find more in-depth information about each mod in our Kanga Guide.

Hunger (Kanga: Culinary)

"This much I knew: If you are what you eat, then I only want to eat the good stuff. But to my dad..." - Remy, Ratatouille.

"Food is fuel. You get picky about what you put in the tank, your engine is gonna die." - Django, Ratatouille.

The Kanga mods make us all a version of Remy. While yes, we can survive on cooked meat and raw berries, it is only that: surviving. We want to live. Well, we want to stay alive and also continue earning experience points so that we can gain more levels and grow as characters as well as reaffirm our social bonds so we don't lose ourselves to lonely insanity. Same difference, right?

Hunger now means more than how many berries you last stuffed your face with. Now, you must consider what kind of food it is you're eating. Whether you've eaten it too much recently. Whether you're having a meal with friends in a social setting. Whether you are craving something specific. And, yes, whether you've even developed an addiction to a certain dish.

When you eat too much survival food, you first gain only partial experience, then lose the ability to gain experience at all. This is indicated by an icon in the bottom right of your screen that, if you hold the H key, will tell you of its effect. To circumvent this, get with a Cook who can prepare Basic or Plated meals. The higher the tier of meal the more filling and nutritious, and therefore the better buffs you will obtain after eating.

All characters now have a hidden social need that goes along with their hunger. When your character is lacking in this need, they will have a brief cry after eating a meal, and the icon of a black silhouette of a seated person will appear in the bottom right of your screen. To fulfill this need, there are two things you can do:

If your character is more of a loner, you can take a plated meal that has 'Your player must be seated to eat this meal!' in its description, sit down, and then eat the meal. This will fill the need just enough to get you going again!

If your character is more social, you can take the same plated meals and sit down with a few others around you. When you eat in a social setting, you'll get an experience buff for sufficiently fulfilling the need!

One more thing: temperature. Food is best consumed when steaming hot from the stove! If you find a dish you've kept in storage has gone cold, you won't be able to eat it until you've heated it up again. Find a Cook to reheat it, or just visit one whenever you get hungry to avoid the issue altogether!

Sleep (Kanga: Medical)

Once a day, your character will need to sleep to rest and regain their energy. This need will be made fairly obvious by your character yawning, and an icon of a tired/sleepy eye appearing in the bottom right of your screen. When it does, simply find a bed on which you can lay down (using the radial menu), and do so. After around ten or fifteen seconds, your screen will go black then display several Z's, indicating that your character is indeed sleeping. Once that screen disappears, your character is rested and can get up from bed, refreshed.

Ignoring your need for sleep will have some pretty unpleasant side effects: distorted vision, weakness, lack of XP gain, and ever-present yawning. Who knows, you may even start to hallucinate if you go without sleep for long enough... Best not to test it.

Illness (Kanga: Medical)

There are a great many illnesses that are added by the Kanga mods. From Appendicitis to Yellow Fever, these illnesses are varied in their contraction, severity, and cure. Some can be cured by simple bed rest. Others require the intervention of an Apothecary or it will increase to an advanced stage. All of them will hinder your survival.

When you are taken ill, your character will begin to cough at random, your vision will go quite wonky (getting worse as the illness progresses), and a green icon of a gross-looking splat will appear in the bottom right of your screen.

The only way to discover which illness you have contracted is for an Apothecary to test your blood. They can do so by taking a sample of your blood and combining it with a specific electrolytic in a Diagnostic station and having you craft the diagnostic form personally, or by having you lay in a Hospital Bed and checking you there.

Once you have been diagnosed you can refer to an Illness Compendium in-game, provided by an Apothecary, for more information on your particular ailment and how to treat it.

Injury (Kanga: Medical)

If you've never broken a bone or gotten a cut, you're lying. With the plethora of both imaginative and unimaginative ways to become injured in life, it is a guaranteed inevitability that it will happen to you at some point. When it does, there's more than just a whack to your overall vitality to worry about now. More than just physical damage to worry about now, too.

If you hold the H key on your keyboard, an info pane will appear on the right side of your screen. This pane displays your wellness, consisting of things you can readily check yourself--fatigue and external wounds--and things you need an Apothecary to give you a check up on--internal organs, mental status, skeletal structure, and respiratory, circulatory, and optical systems. To continue to function at peak capacity, you'll need to make sure all of these are taken care of.

An Apothecary can give you an exact diagnosis of each of your wellness points. They can do this by testing your blood with an electrolytic and having you craft the wellness report personally, or by having you lay in a Hospital Bed and checking you there.      Once they know what's not optimal, they can give you specific medical syrups to bring you back into perfect health.

An apple a day will not keep the Apothecary away. Only consistent routine check ups will!

Death (Kanga: Medical)

Normally, when you die, you're dead. You drop your inventory in a bag and have to respawn and go retrieve it. With Kanga, however, death is much more detrimental; You know that 'value your life' rule that all roleplay has? Now it's a game mechanic.

If you do die, you will lose experience points. There is a certain percentage that will be lost on each death, and the only way to get them back is to pay respects at your own grave. If you had a grave placed down before you died, your lost experience will be stored at this grave. By using flowers at the grave, you can regain a certain percentage each time your mourn, until you've regained all of the lost experience. Apothecaries can provide you with a grave, a shovel to place said grave, and flowers with which to mourn. If you don't have a grave down before you die... oh well.

Your inventory will be stored in the grave if you had one down. Otherwise, it defaults to the bag on the ground where you died.
